  1. One cool thing about comments (and one that helps make some comments interesting) is the use of HTML. For instance, you can use the 'i' tag to make some text italic

  2. Even better, you can use the 'a href=' tag to link text. Wikipedia - looks a lot better than http://www.wikipedia.org'

  3. The article made me curious especially about the RSS, which i might start to use actively.

  6. I do agree with you in some points, though I think you are too negative about the young generation's use of the internet. I do actually use bookmarks regularly in my school-work and I haven't posted photos of myself at any other pages than Facebook. I use the internet a lot, for what purpose varies, but I use it mostly for school-work, read news or check the weather. Of course, I must admit that I spend a lot of time on Facebook, but I'm working on that.. I think what is important is that we learn what to post and not to post, and where to post it.

  7. The article contain many interesting points! I personally never use internet to other stuff than communicating with friends or find sources for schoolprojects:)

  8. @Mari: You use bookmarks? Do you mean the bookmarking function in your browser? If so, then that's really what I'm talking about. Do you use social bookmarking? That would be interesting (and help prove me wrong).

  9. Simon: You claim that most of your students are passive in their use of the internet. But have you seen how young people use f. ex. facebook? Many use facebook to share links and opinions, both in groups and on their homepage. I think most students are not as passive as you think, they just use more private medias to express their opinion.

  11. Marie and Guro makes an interesting point: how are young people to be what you call "active" on the Internet, when we are still too young to be at the same level as those who writes the most interesting stuff? If we should be as active as everyone else on f.ex. Youtube or Wikipedia, the Internet would be full (as if it wasn't full enough) of bullshit.

  12. Mari raises another interesting issue here - the idea that some fora are more appropriate than others. You shouldn't post personal info here, but it's OK on Facebook, for example. Experience would seem to prove this wrong. Content you publish on Facebook is visible to all 600 (or however many) friends you have. Do you have control over what all of them are doing with your content?

  13. There is a reason for why young people are passive users of media and don't upload much on the internet, only reading and watching other peoples material. The reason why I don't write anything on for example Wikipedia is because I don't feel that I have enough knowledge about something interesting that others want to know about. I am still young and have much to learn, and most of the people who write things on Wikipedia are a bit older than I am. Still, many young users of media upload videos on for example YouTube. I don't, and the reason is because I don't feel the need to expose myself to the rest of the world. If I did have a major talent for something, for example making short films, sure I would show it to people, but I think that the internet already is filled up with amateur/useless work that we don't need.

  15. We like the amusing tone you use in this essay, and a lot of what you have written here is true. Still, many of the examples you have given about pupils use of media are generalising.

You have written that few of "your" pupils have uploaded a YouTube video or contributed to a Wikipedia-page. This information is based on "your" pupils. So remember that this is not the case for every teenager in Norway..

Yes, our generation probably use a lot of time on the Internet, without being very critical. But then again, to be critical is something that we can learn by being conscious on it. So please do not criticize our generation, and instead motivate us to get a critical eye on media. :)

  16. This is a good article and you have a lot of good points. However, I have to say that even though I agree with you when you say that Deiligst.no is horrible site, it’s an exaggeration to say that it’s the most popular social networking site in Norway.

  17. Although this article is a bit extreme, it has a lot of good points! As a teenager it is easy to identify with your statements. Mature use of the internet does not produce itself and it is something we need to learn in order to use the internet effective.

  18. I do not agree with you at all. You do not know what students use social networks for. Yes, of course we use it to chat and things like that, but you don't know how many groups I and my schoolmates have made to different school projects.

For the record; I've never visited deiligst.no ;)

  19. Facebook is not only a site where you can add friends and post pictures. You can also use facebook to get news updates. I use it almost as a RSS feed. I liked for example vg’s facebook group and now I get live updates from vg and if I am interested in the story I can click on the link. I can also see if any of my friends liked this story which would make me more interested in it. So I think this is why sites like digg and reddit are not as popular as it could be.
